KAY CONTEMPORARY ART announces a solo exhibition of oil paintings by Joel Greene

Joel Greene can truly be called a “Living Legend”. He has been creating New Mexico landscapes and exhibiting his paintings on Canyon Road for forty-five years. Working in oil, Joel’s vision has been referred to as “soft cubism”. Through his paintings he maintains a lively exchange with the great Modernists of the past. With the New Mexico landscape permeating his experience, this dialogue echoes especially the artistic voices of  New Mexico Modernists of the early 20th century, yet Joel’s contribution to the conversation is uniquely his own.

Joel possesses an equally diverse set of character traits, including an enormously educated mind and nimble curiosity, tucked behind a quiet-mannered façade. There’s a subtle spirit of playfulness that shows up in his work. His paintings reveal a man who perceives the world in complex and infinitely interchangeable combinations of swirling, flowing, passionately dancing patterns, colors and forms. He revels in the liberty – bequeathed by the Modernists whose living legacy he continues to amplify – to push color, compress space, bend imagery and shift angles in the service of his own vision. And it is a vision rooted in deep familiarity with the landscapes of New Mexico.

17×24″, oil on canvas framed, $4,500.
